Automatic Dependent Surveillance – Broadcast (ADS-B) is a new aircraft identification system that has aircraft periodically broadcast position information of its whereabouts. In this way air traffic control and also other aircraft have both accurate and timely information.

ADS-B relies on satellite (GPS) derived data to obtain high precision location data. It removes much of the burden of situational awareness from centralized radar command and control centers, distributing that activity across the fleet.
